A Hidden Treasure

Every so often the four of us cuddle up on the couch, including our house cat Fred, with a big bowl of popcorn and watch a show called Expedition Unknown. It is about a man named Josh who goes on crazy adventures searching for the unknown things of our history; a true treasure hunter. He crawls through scary holes trying to find just one piece of a broken vase or any evidence that would lead to a phenomenal artifact dating back thousands of years. To me, the most fascinating part of this show is his ambition for the search. He eats weird things to gain favor with the tribal people, he uses many forms of transportation and disregards how scary, cold, weird, or dirty the job may be. He searches until he finds something.

As mothers raising children in the 21st century, we are queens of searching and exploration. We search reviews before buying a product. We search for health questions, the best diapers, the shampoo with the least amount of parabens (whatever that even is). No matter what it may be, we search it out. I have a strange habit of turning to google when I feel worried about situations with my kids or myself. We are a searching, seeking people group, but is it possible we may be spending too much time searching for things of lesser importance?

In 1 Kings verse 3, the Lord appeared to King Solomon in a dream and told him He will give Solomon whatever he asks for. Solomon did not ask for riches or for any of life’s pleasures and conveniences, he asked for a great treasure, wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to use your experience and knowledge in order to make sensible decisions or judgments. Why hasn’t this been the treasure I seek as a mom and wife more often? Solomon was very “wise” in asking for wisdom because he knew that with wisdom, comes a great key for life. I look at my boys and sometimes feel so lost as to whether I am doing this right or wrong and google has not been a faithful source to help me feel more confident as a parent. In fact, it makes me feel even more incapable of being a good mother all together. As God reminds me to seek out HIS wisdom, I believe that I will trust Him more and more in this adventure of parenting. Continually listening to His voice, the sound above all other sounds, His sound, His rhythm, His guiding. His yes’s and His no’s. Let us all be encouraged to seek out His wisdom like a hidden treasure, and if we search for it with the same passion that Josh searches for his lost treasures, oh can you imagine the mothers we could be?

If you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God
